“Witch”

A Witch, as a character of the Mardi Gras, is most often of very repulsive features, scary and threatening. It is the female mask of the mythical “alien”. According to old Baltic mythology and religion, the Witch is the goddess of the forest. Etymology of the name refers to her distinctiveness in society, possibly clairvoyance, divination and treatment capacity. It is possible that the negative features of the image emerged after the baptism of Lithuania, namely during the time of the spread of witch courts in Europe.
