The Wolf is a character from fairy tales and legends, possibly having totemic origins. This personage is ominous, yet sometimes favourable to people. Eventually the image of the tribe’s guardian became the symbol of a tribe leader, later – the Duke, his castle and the city’s suburbs. Mid-19th century descriptions of festivity costumes mention the mask of “wolf-godfather”.
